Using Animal Totems in day-to-day situations
by Diana Jarvis
Have you ever felt a strong link to a particular animal? Do you find that you are constantly being accompanied in your meditations by one? Perhaps you are being told to delve further into investigating your totem animal! If you are noticing a repeating pattern of one animal, it is well worth investigating the totem qualities of that animal ... is it below?
This article is about how to use the qualities of some animal totems to enhance areas of your life. Imagine them; imagine being them and bring their qualities into your life to help you with day-to-day situations. If you feel that you need the qualities of a certain animal, try meditating on them and seeing what further insight they can give you. I've given you a start, but don't stop here!
In this section I've highlighted some areas of your life you may wish to improve, and the animals that can help you with that area.
The Hummingbird
The Hummingbird is the only creature that can stop dead whilst travelling at full speed and can hover, move forwards, backwards, up or down. It lives on nectar, searching for the sweetness of life. Its long tongue allows it to bypass the outer layer of a flower to find the hidden treasures underneath.
Imagine that you too can see beneath the surface of a person and find the greater qualities within. Be adaptable to change and move with it, ensuring that you do not rush a situation, or become so laid back that your partner is overtaking you. Be the Hummingbird and search out love at full speed.
The Bear
Unlike other animals who are active during a specific time of day, the bear is active both day and night. This trait shows the bear's connection to the sun and his strength and power. It also shows that the bear has the ability to work with lunar power as well, drawing on its intuition and psychic qualities. During the winter, bears spend several months sleeping in dens without eating. This period of withdrawal teaches us how to go within and find the resources necessary for our personal survival. The bear holds the teachings of introspection.
Use the totem of the bear to draw on the power of both the sun and the moon to heal yourself and others. Pay attention to how yoe think, act and interact. Bear teaches you how to make choices from a position of power and how to use that power to help and heal others. Become the bear and share out those bear hugs, a guaranteed tonic, however you are feeling!
The Lioness
The Lioness hunts and kills prey, feeds her pride and takes care of her young. Although the male is the group's protector, the Lioness is the hunter. She knows when to wait and when to strike; and will make a meal of anything that she can catch. She teaches us the secrets of silence and patience, for sex can be a little like a hunt, in many ways. Patience is to pay attention to detail.
Lioness suggests that we examine ourselves closely in order to understand our strengths and weaknesses, and to wait for the proper moment to act and take full advantage of a given situation, taking into account prevailing conditions (those of the partner). Learn from Lioness the proper way to use power and strength. Stay calm and still, sure of your power, but don't hesitate to fight for the things you are interested in.
The Wolf

Wolves have been long regarded by Native Amercans as teachers or pathfinders. Wolves are fiercely loyal to their mates, and have a strong sense of family, whilst maintaining individualism. Wolves are friendly, social and intelligent animals and are truly free spirits, even though their packs are highly organised. They seem to go out of their way to avoid a fight; one is rarely necessary when a shift in posture, a growl, or a glance, gets the point across quite readily.
Use the Wolf totem to bring about a strong sense of self, and to learn to find new solutions to problems while providing stability and support that one normally associates with a family structure (which is how the best work environments are!). Wolf can also teach you how to face the end of your career with dignity and courage.
The Owl
Owl is at home in the night. It has great awareness of all that is around it at all times and has incredible vision, including the ability to see over 180 degrees around. It also sees clearly what it looks at. It has great intuition: it is the totem of psychics and clairvoyants. It has the courage to follow its instincts, knowing that it is right. It can clearly see through a trap, including a trap that one sets for oneself.
Avail yourself of the totem of the owl and draw its abilities into you. Owl will help you to see behind masks, it will show secrets and omens, help you to shape-shift into something/someone else if you need and can link the dark, unseen world of the inner self with the world of light. If you really want to dig deep and get to know your inner self (in order to put your outer self right) then owl is the totem for you.
The Cat

Cats are fiercely independent. You can never own one: it allows you to take care of it and love it, but only on its terms. Cats come and go as they please, when they please. Cat represents the qualities of money itself and; using cat as a a totem, will make you better aware of what you are dealing with when you want to work with money. It may also help you to attract money to you, but will be an invaluable aid where you need to realise that money is transitory. The cat decides how long he stays with you and if he stays with you; so you need to keep him interested or he is gone. He can organise your life for you if you let him ... or you can work together in a kind of partnership. Just remember that it is not a real partnership and that both you and the cat can help each other .. but essentially can both function without the other one - money is not everything!
