Activate your Fortunate Blessings Corner

by Carole Chui

Often called the 'Wealth Corner', Fortunate Blessings is the true name for the South East Corner (or far left  when standing with your back to the door of the room).  The Element governing this section is Wood and its number is 4*. This corner, however, refuses to be bound by the normal Element rules.  The colour should be green (from Wood) but in fact red is often used, as it is the colour of the South and of good luck.  As wood feeds fire, you would not normally expect to use red as it is the colour of fire, but the sheer luckiness of this colour is the most important thing.  Traditional Chinese brides wear red and at New Year, gifts of money are given in red lucky envelopes (called Hong Bao / Lai Si).  Purple is a special colour only used in this corner.  As for green, you can use actual plants. Do not use sharp edged plants and do not leave wilting plants in that, or indeed any, corner.  In particular, use round leaf plants, to mimic the shape of coins. The Jade (or Money) Plant is tailor made for this corner (Crassula). Jade Tree

Metal controls Wood, so you would not normally use white or metallic colours or the round shape associated with metal in a Wood corner. This corner is an exception to all those rules because it is connected with money luck, and that is why it is often known as the Wealth corner. The room in which you set up this corner should be the living room, the most active room.

I wrote for my local paper on feng shui 10 years or more ago and a reader wrote in for help with her house. I found the whole house was missing its Fortunate Blessings, dealt with that, then showed her how to activate the corner in her specially chosen room. Later that week I saw the newsvendors in town with placards reading “York woman’s feng shui win”. Ernie had blessed her at last with a premium bond win after many barren years. Don’t expect huge lottery wins, though. My mother also took my advice and found two ancient savings books belonging to her late parents. One had £7 in it and one, I think £3. However, it was an unexpected gain and she was thrilled. I think what happens is that you get the Universe’s attention, so it looks to see if anything is due to you. How to do it? I will give you an easy recipe.

Hong BaoTake one red envelope (make it from paper if you haven’t got a fancy Chinese Hong Bao (or Lai Si in Cantonese) and put 3 coins in it. They should be 3 of the same kind. Go on, use £ coins, but if you take them to pay the milkman, do remember to replace them. Why 3 when the number is 4? Because the 3 will strive to attract the missing 4th!  Leave the flap loose and tuck the envelope away (possibly under that jade/money plant!) and try to forget about it. Tell Warty what happens!

*You may have heard the Chinese think 4 is unlucky.  Certainly the Cantonese in Hong Kong did. However, that is because of the tonal language. “Sei” means both 4 and death in Cantonese, according to the tone used, although the written form is different. That is why popular superstition says it is unlucky. The Chinese number box used to generate the numbers for the corners has no such problems with 4. Those of you who are into magic squares, it is an Earth or Saturn square that is used, with 5 in the centre and every side adding up to 15. I’m Carole Chui, though, not Carol Vorderman, and that is as far as I will take it for now.
