CalendarSalus and Festival of Hygieia (00:00 - March 30th, 2011)
Salus is a Roman goddess, representing the welfare of the people. She is depicted with snakes and a bowl.
Hygieia is the Greek equivalent of Salus and is the goddess of health, cleanliness and sanitation, but also has connections with the moon. She is associated with the prevention of sickness and the continuation of good health. She is often depicted as a young woman feeding a large snake that is wrapped around her (snakes are found in the British Medical Association's logo). The word 'hygiene' is derived from her name. |
