Celtic Tree Month - Ash (00:00 - February 18th, 2012)
Nion is the name for the Ash Tree in Celtic and it is regarded with awe and reverence. The Ash mentioned in this month is not the Rowan (Mountain Ash) but the larger version!
Ash, and its importance is recorded in many faiths. It is Yggdrasil, the World Tree in Norse mythology and runes are often made of Ash because it is Odin's sacrifice, hanging on this tree for nine days and nine nights that brought the runes to the world.
It is said that Ash has the power to ward off fairies and it is often used as the stale for a besom (witch's broom).
