Beltane (00:00 - May 1st, 2012)
Beltane (or Beltain/ Beltaine) is one of the most celebrated of Sabbats: possibly because it is a cause for merriment, laughter and occasionally a little raucous and raunchy behaviour! Beltane is a Celtic word which means 'fires of Bel', Bel was a Celtic deity. Yet again, this is a fire festival and it celebrates the coming of the summer and is strongly associated with fertility.
Many Pagan handfastings take place at Beltane, it is a traditional time. The Maypole (a phallic symbol), the May Queen and other customs all connect with this time. The Beltane fire is also a must - sometimes Wicker Men (without Edward Woodward or Nicholas Cage in them) would be burnt ... and in some parts of the UK they still are.
If you want to do a love ritual - Beltane is a good time. Spirits are high, the sap is rising ... go for it! The God has now reached maturity and mates with the Goddess so even the deities are on your side and understand!
Beltane rituals include fire and blossoms, any symbols of the Spring in full bloom are fine.
