Imbolc (00:00 - February 1st, 2012)
Imbolc (pronounced 'im'olk') is also known as Oimelc. The world comes from Celtic times and is often translated as 'ewe's milk'.
As with most Pagan sacred days, it connects with the changes in the land and weather, as well as the life cycle of animals. This is the start of the new farming season and it is a time when stores of food would be low. Hence, rituals were performed to ensure a good harvest and plenty of food in the months to come.
Imbolc is also a fire festival and is often performed in honour of the great Celtic goddess Brigid, who is a fire goddess, but is also connected with healing and fertility. The lighting of fires is a reminder (and a plea) that the light of the sun will increase over the following months and bring light and life back to the land.
