Celtic Tree Month - Elder (00:00 - November 25th, 2012)
The month of Elder runs from 25th November until 23rd December.
The Elder is closely associated with the Goddess and is seen as one of her sacred trees. It is particularly associated with her as Venus, although it also connects with her in her Crone aspect. This tree is linked with the great cycle of life, death and rebirth.
There are some old legends that tell of a dryad (tree spirit) called Hylde-moer. She was particularly fond of taking refuge in the Elder tree and would watch over it carefully. If the tree was damaged in any way, Hylde-moer would haunt the house of the people that did the deed. Even today, many witches will not take a piece of Elder unless they ask the spirit of the tree or the Goddess first (always a good practice if you want to take a living of part of any tree: for a wand, for instance). If you need to do so you should ask politely and wait for you answer, while gently holding the part of the tree you wish to cut. If you find that the energy/temperature in that part changes slightly then you have approval and the dryad has withdrawn, allowing you to cut the tree with no damage to the spirit, If you can't feel this - move on! If you do get the ok, remember to leave an offering: a silver coin buried at the base of the tree or a libation of wine or mead would do nicely.
Because of its association with the Goddess, the Elder is naturally associated with great magickal powers such as faery magick, healing, love and protection. If you would like to connect with the faery realms, sit and meditate under an Elder tree!
