Samhain (All Hallow's Eve)

(00:00 - October 31st, 2012)
Samhain (pronounced Saun, or more commonly Sow-en) is often seen as the start of the Witches' New Year. It marks the summer's end and it seen as a time of reflection, a time to connect with our ancestors and departed loved ones that have gone to the Summer Lands in advance of us. Samhain is a great time for divination, it is said that this night is the night when the veil between this world and the next world is at it's thinnest, so communication with those departed who would help us, is easiest. Scrying in the fire is also an ancient tradition.

If you are keen to celebrate Samhain in a traditional way, sign up as a Warty's Witch and you will have access to my Book of Shadows. This month it includes a Samhain ritual especially designed for a solitary witch, with very few tools needed.

Apple Bobbing
Get an apple for everybody taking part. Get a large bowl or tub and half-fill it with water. Put in the apples and stir them around, preferably using a twig/branch from a sacred tree, such as hazel or ash. Then let everybody loose, to try to grab an apple with their teeth. They get three tries! Keep the winning apple so you can use it in the following ritual.

Apple and Mirror
Before midnight strikes, sit in front of a mirror on your own. Light a candle and keep that as the only light. Meditate, and ask a question. Then cut the apple into nine pieces. Eat eight of the pieces, and then throw the ninth over your left shoulder. Turn your head to look over your left shoulder, and you will see an image in the mirror that will give you your answer.

Apple of Love
This ritual is sometimes done on May Eve, and is usually for single girls, but anyone single can try. Get an apple and peel it, being careful to peel it in one piece. Relax, think of love and the future, and then, at the stroke of midnight, throw the peel over your left shoulder. The shape the peel forms is the first letter of the first name of your true love.

Mash O' Nine
A traditional recipe (pick up your copy from Warty's Tavern), to make for Samhain and share with friends. Each serve a portion yourself, and watch out for the ring! The person that gets the ring will be the next married. My witch tried this out with friends. Her partner got the ring and they married just over a year later - the first of the group to do so!
